Elias Stemeseder (* 1. October 1990 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian pianist of modern jazz . According to Rondo , he is a great discovery and impresses with his mature playing, which, according to Jazzthing , does not adhere to the “guidelines of the jazz establishment” or “the rules of postmodernism ”. His voicings are reminiscent of Ethan Iverson's .

biography

Stemeseder began to learn classical piano at the age of nine. During his school days he began studying at the Anton Bruckner Private University at the age of fifteen . He studied at the Jazz Institute Berlin until 2015, and has lived in New York since then. In addition to his main instrument, the piano, he also plays synthesizers.

He is part of various musical formations, u. a. Jim Black Trio, John Zorn 's Bagatelles, Greg Cohen Quintet, Philipp Groppers Philm , Jim Blacks Malamute , Anna Webbers Percussive Mechanics , Robert Landfermann Quintet and Y-OTIS (a project by the Swedish saxophonist Otis Sandsjö ). Solo concerts led him a. a. to the Nuoro Jazz Festival, Haus der Berliner Festspiele, 12points Festival Dublin and South Tyrol Jazz Festival. Stemeseder is the leader of a quartet with Eldar Tsalikov, Igor Spallati and Ugo Alunni. In 2013 he also founded the band Eyebone with Nels Cline and Jim Black ; In 2018 he also played in the quartet of Joe McPhee (with Ken Filiano , Raf Vertessen).
