Erik Leuthäuser (born June 26, 1996 in Freital ) is a German jazz singer and composer who works in the border area between jazz and experimental pop and increasingly uses the German language . The jazz singer Esther Kaiser describes him as "an extremely talented and original young musician who revived the term jazz singer in the true sense of the word."

Live and act

Leuthäuser came into contact with jazz and pop music at a young age through his father, a studied jazz guitarist and guitar teacher . He sang in a school band, was trained on the piano and attended the Saxon State High School for Music Carl Maria von Weber , where he a. a. was taught by Celine Rudolph . After graduating from high school , I started studying jazz singing in Weimar a . a. with Michael Schiefel . In 2015 he moved to the Jazz Institute Berlin , where Judy Niemack worked with him. An Erasmus stay in Helsinki took place in 2017. From 2014 to 2016 Leuthäuser was one of the singers in the Federal Jazz Orchestra . In addition to his work as a solo vocalist , he sings in the a cappella band Wortart Ensemble , which sets modern German poetry to music, in the Philipp Rumsch Ensemble, which mixes elements from minimal music , electronic music , pop and classical music and uses the principle of improvisation connects, and he improvises in a duo with the Latvian singer Arta Jēkabsone . He was also a background singer a . a. for Quincy Jones , George Benson , Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Jacob Collier .

In 2015 Leuthauser's debut album was released ; on it are u. a. to hear his own German vocalese texts for the bebop compositions and the solos of well-known jazz musicians such as Charlie Parker . It was nominated for the quarterly best list 1/2016 at the German Record Critics' Prize.

The singer's music is inspired by the gay subculture of Berlin. He himself is openly gay .

In MPS Records Leuthäuser 2018 released his second studio album ; on this he is accompanied u. a. by Kurt Rosenwinkel , Joey Baron and Greg Cohen . This was followed in 2020 by a live album in a duo with Wolfgang Köhler and the repertoire of Irene Kral and Alan Broadbent .

Prizes and awards

Leuthäuser was active in numerous competitions. After winning 2nd prize at the Finsterwalde pop and jazz singing competition in 2015, he won first prize in the international jazz singing competition of the “Riga Jazz Stage” in Latvia , and first prize in the “Big Sky 2016” jazz singing competition in Moscow and the 2nd prize and audience prize of the "Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition". In 2017 he was able to win the 2nd prize in the “Voicingers” singing competition in Poland. In 2018 he received 1st prize at the Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition in Washington DC
