Jerzy Konikowski (born January 24, 1947 in Bytom ) is a German chess player of Polish origin.

Life

He learned to play chess at the age of 14. In 1981, as part of a family reunification, he moved to Germany with his wife and daughter and received German citizenship. From 1982 until retirement he worked at the University of Dortmund as a chemical engineer .

Chess career

In close chess he was one of the best in Poland for many years. He has won several international tournaments and holds the title of FIDE Master . In the Polish team championship he played in 1967 for Caissa Bydgoszcz, 1971 to 1974 for KS Hutnik Nowa Huta, 1977 and 1978 for KKSz Krakow and 1979 and 1980 for KS Hutnik Warsaw. Konikowski played in the German federal chess league from 1983 to 1985 for SG Bochum 31 and from 1989 to 1994 had individual missions for the chess friends Dortmund-Brackel. He is listed as inactive at FIDE because he has not played a rated game since 1998.

Chess coach

Jerzy Konikowski completed his studies as a chess trainer at a sports college in Warsaw . From 1978 to 1981 he was the Polish national coach, at the 1980 Chess Olympiad in Malta he led the Polish women's national team to the bronze medal. He has the trainer license A of the German Chess Federation . He trained Arkadij Naiditsch for a year, Germany's No. 1 for several years. At the end of December 2010, he was an honorary trainer for the German Deaf Sports Association.

Success in correspondence chess

Since the age of 15 he has also devoted himself to correspondence chess . His greatest successes include the 7th place in the final of the XLVIII. European Championship and his victory in the I. Sergiusz-Czerniakow-Memorial (1970–1973), at that time the strongest correspondence chess tournament in Poland . After moving to Germany, he won the 1st  Bogdan Śliwa Memorial (2005–2006).

Opening theorist and chess author

Jerzy Konikowski stands for the development of several opening variants, for the research of which he also used the correspondence chess game. The Konikowski-Hardy gambit, which is played with the moves 1. e2 – e4 e7 – e5 2. Ng1 – f3 Nb8 – c6 3. Bf1 – b5 Bf8 – c5 4. c2 – c3 d7 – d5 !? is one of his most famous developments.

As an author, Jerzy Konikowski has written more than 100 chess books that have been published in Germany, Poland, the USA, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. He commented on games and wrote theory articles for the Deutsche Schachzeitung , Fernschach International, Rochade Europa , ChessBase Magazin , Fernschachpost and other chess magazines.

Chess composition

He has also made a name for himself as a chess composer . He wrote about 400 chess problems, of which over 100 were awarded in international tournaments. Eight of his assignments found a place in FIDE albums , the collections of the world's best assignments.

Honors

For his long-standing membership in the German Fernschachbund e. V. was awarded the Silver Badge of Honor in 2008. He has also been the recipient of the Swallow's Silver Badge of Honor (chess composition) since 2006. In 1973, the Polish Chess Federation awarded Jerzy Konikowski with the Golden Badge of Honor.
