Volkhard Rührig (born August 28, 1953 in Ochsenfurt , † September 28, 1990 in Oberaudorf ) was a German chess player .

He learned to play chess at the age of nine and was initially a member of the Turm Zeil chess club , but switched to SC 1868 Bamberg in 1969 , with whom he later played in the German Federal Chess League. In 1976 and 1977 Bamberg won the German team championship .

Rührig has held the title of FIDE Master since 1983 . One of his greatest individual successes was winning an international tournament in Šumperk in 1983 and the Dähne Cup in 1985. 1987 Rührig qualified for the German individual championship.

In January 1984, he reached his highest Elo rating of 2375. Every year, the SC Bamberg a Volkhard-Rührig Memorial Tournament.

Volkhard Rührig studied mathematics and physics at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg from 1973 to 1981 . He then worked as a systems analyst and software developer, from 1984 for Siemens in Munich. He remained single.

He got cancer in October 1989 and died 11 months later in a clinic.
