Jan Smejkal (* 22. March 1946 in Lanškroun ) is a Czech Chess - Grandmaster . He is known for his time battles and great fighting spirit.
Chess career
Jan Smejkal became International Master in 1970 and Grand Master in 1972.
In the 1970s he was among the world's best and played three times in interzonal tournaments : in Leningrad 1973 he was fourth, in Biel 1976 eleventh and in the interzonal tournament Rio de Janeiro 1979 also eleventh. In Leningrad, he narrowly missed qualifying for the Candidates' tournament by losing to Anatoly Karpov in the last round .
In 1973, 1979 and 1986 Smejkal won the national championship of Czechoslovakia.
He has also done very well in many international tournaments: he won the Rubinstein Memorial in Polanica-Zdrój twice, in 1970 and 1972. He was also a winner or shared first place in Starý Smokovec (1970), Amsterdam (1971), Smederevska Palanka (1971), Palma de Mallorca (1972), Luhačovice (1973), Novi Sad (1976), Belgrade (1976), Vršac (1976) and Leipzig (1976).
At the Dortmund Chess Days in Dortmund in 1977 , he won the grand master's tournament. He had further successes in Virovitica (1977), Teplice (1979), Warsaw (1979) and in Baden-Baden (1985).
At the Bad Wörishofen chess festival he was first in 1985 and third in 1986 behind Gennadi Kusmin and Vlastimil Hort .
Smejkal is listed as inactive at FIDE, as he has not played a rated game since the 2001/02 season of the Czech Extra League. With his highest rating of 2615 in January 1976, Smejkal was tied with Michail Tal in 11th place in the FIDE rankings.

National team
Smejkal took part in ten Chess Olympiads , 1968 , 1970 , 1972 , 1978 , 1980 , 1982 , 1984 , 1986 , 1988 and 1990 for Czechoslovakia, 1994 for the Czech Republic. In 1982 he took second place with the team, in 1970 he reached second place in the individual ranking on the fourth board.
He also competed with Czechoslovakia at the European Team Championships in 1970, 1977 and 1980.

In the Czech Extraliga Smejkal played in the 1992/93 season for TJ Dopravní podniky Prague , where he had already played in the Czechoslovak team championship, from 1993 to 1995 for TJ Bohemians Prague , with whom he became Czech team champion in 1994 , and at the European Club Cup 1994 participated, in the 1995/96 season again for TJ Dopravní podniky Prague and from 1996 to 2002 for the ŠK DP Mladí Prague , with which he became champion in 2001 . In the German Bundesliga, Smejkal played from 1983 to 1985 for SG Enger / Spenge , from 1985 to 1993 for Munich SC 1836 and from 1995 to 2000 for SK Passau .
