Karen Asrjan ( Armenian Կարեն Ասրյան ; in scientific transliteration Karen Asryan, English transcription Karen Asrian , pronunciation ka'rɛn asǝr'jan ; born April 24, 1980 in Yerevan ; † June 9, 2008 ibid) was an Armenian chess player and international grandmaster .
Career
Already in 1999, at the age of 19, Karen Asrjan was able to win the championship of his country and in the following years still celebrated great tournament successes. In 2001 he won in Dubai after ranking in front of well-known players such as Jaan Ehlvest , Alexei Alexandrow , Artasches Minassjan , Alexander Motyljow and others. a. and in 2004 he won a tournament in Stepanakert ahead of Bartłomiej Macieja , Gabriel Sarkissjan , Aschot Anastassjan and others.
At the FIDE World Championships he came in 1999 in Las Vegas to the third round, where he was eliminated against the eventual winner Alexander Chalifman . In 2000 in New Delhi he failed in the first round against Loek van Wely , in 2001 in Moscow also in the first round after a tie-break against Igor Khenkin . At the 2004 World Cup in Tripoli he reached the second round, but lost to Michael Adams there . At the 2005 World Chess Cup he lost to Wang Yue in the first round .
At the national championship in 2006 he was the favorite because of the absence of other players (including Lewon Aronjan ), but ended up in third place behind Artasches Minassjan and the surprisingly strong playing Arman Paschikjan . In 2007 he won the national title for the second time after 1999. In January 2008 he won again, after scoring before Minassyan tied on points.
Asrjan died on June 9, 2008, at the age of 28, apparently of a cerebral haemorrhage while driving.
National team
Azrjan participated with Armenia in the Chess Olympiads 1996 (with the second team), 1998 , 2000 , 2002 and 2006 . He won with the team in 2006 and took third place in 2002, in the individual competition he won in 1996 on the first reserve board. He also played at the World Team Championships in 2001 and 2005, in which Armenia each finished third, and the European Team Championship 2007 in Heraklion ( Crete ), in which Armenia won the silver medal.

Asrjan won the Armenian team championship in 2006 and 2007 with Bank King Yerevan , with whom he also participated in the European Club Cup in both years . In the Russian team championship he played in 2006 and 2007 for Southern Urals Chelyabinsk and in 2008 for Chess Federation Moscow , in Greece in 2005 for EES Korydallou and in the French top 16 in the seasons 2006/07 and 2007/08 for Club de Bischwiller .
