The Federal Law on Data Protection ( DSG ) is the data protection law of Switzerland . It aims to protect the personality and the fundamental rights of natural and legal persons about whom data are processed ( Art. 1 ).

A core element is the enforceable right to information ( Art. 8 ). The information is usually given in writing and free of charge. The owner of the data collection must provide complete information and also provide information about the origin and the purpose of processing.

The Federal Data Protection and Information Officer , whose legal status and tasks are regulated in Section 5 of the Act, is responsible for monitoring compliance with the statutory regulations .
