Howhannes Gabusjan

Howhannes Gabuzyan ( Armenian Հովհաննես Գաբուզյան , at the World Chess Federation FIDE Hovhannes Gabuzyan ; born May 19, 1995 in Yerevan ) is an Armenian chess player . He has held the title of Grand Master since September 2012 .

Life

Howhannes Gabusjan studied at the Armenian State Institute for Physical Culture and Sport in Yerevan and is now studying with a chess scholarship at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Brownsville .

He won various Armenian junior championships: U14 (2008 and 2009) and U16 (2010 and 2011). He won three silver medals at European Youth Championships : 2011 in Albena, Bulgaria, in the U16 age group and in the U18 age group in Prague in 2012 and in Budva in 2013 . He also came in second at the World Youth Championship (U20) 2012 in Maribor .

The tournaments he won include the 8th International Open in Varna in June 2014 and the International Chess Festival in Honolulu in March 2015. At the 14th University World Chess Championship in Abu Dhabi in 2016 , he won the gold medal ahead of Vladimir Fedoseyev and Pavel Ponkratov . In 2017 he won the Armenian Individual Championship .

With the Armenian national team, he won the 2010 U16 Olympics in Burdur, Turkey . With 8 points from 9 games Howhannes Gabusjan had the best result of all players on the third board. At the U16 Olympics in 2011 in İzmit , Turkey , Armenia finished second with him on the second board behind Russia, which competed with the grandmasters Daniil Dubow and Vladimir Fedoseyev.

His first appearance in the Armenian national team for adults was on the reserve board at the 2017 European Championships in Limenas Chersonisou .

He won the President's Cup with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in 2018 .

Norms and Rating

In April 2012 he received the title of International Master . He achieved the norms for this in February 2011 in the B group of the Aeroflot Open in Moscow with over-fulfillment, in which he was able to win against four grandmasters ( Pawel Smirnow , Michail Ulibin , Alexander Karpatschow and Yevgeny Shaposhnikov ), in June 2011 at the 4th Karen Asrjan Memorial in Jermuk and in January 2012 with over-fulfillment at the 2nd A. Magarjan Memorial in Yerevan. He had met the norms for receiving the grandmaster title in June 2012, namely in March 2012 at the individual European championships in Plovdiv and in June at an international open in Albena, Bulgaria . The grandmaster title was applied for in August 2012, but could not be awarded until September 2012, when Howhannes Gabusjan had exceeded the Elo threshold of 2500.

Its Elo rating is 2556 (as of August 2018), its highest rating to date was 2620 in May 2016.
