The parish church of St. Martin is the Catholic parish church of Marktoberdorf in the Ostallgäu district in Bavaria . The baroque building stands in a prominent position above the city and is visible from afar with its high, hood-topped tower.

history

Already in the 8th century there was a church at this point, which can be regarded as the Reichshofkirche of the Frankish Reichshof Bertoldshofen near Marktoberdorf. In the Middle Ages, the parish of St. Martin in Marktoberdorf was branched off from the original parish of Altdorf. A certain Adalgoz was named as the first pastor at the beginning of the 12th century. The later parishes of Wald , Sulzschneid , Leuterschach and Thalhofen also belonged to the parish .

Building history

Around the year 1200 the church was rebuilt in Romanesque style and was expanded and rebuilt in the 15th century. On October 5, 1437, the Augsburg auxiliary bishop Johann Haiterbach consecrated three altars: a choir altar in honor of Martin von Tours and one north and one south altar. Further modifications followed until the 18th century.

Today's church construction began under Pastor Joseph Ignaz Klaus (1730–1734). The medieval tower and the floor plan of the choir were preserved. Johann Georg Fischer , born in Marktoberdorf, was won over as the master builder . Construction began in 1732. On September 28, 1738 the church was consecrated by the Augsburg vicar general and later auxiliary bishop of Eichstätt Johann Adam Nieberlein .

In 1823 a chapel was added to the east choir above the grave of Elector Clemens Wenzeslaus of Saxony .

Furnishing

It was not until 1747 that the high altar was erected by Joseph Stapf from Pfronten . It is designed as a barrier that separates the entire choir from the sacristy behind it. The altar structure itself is designed as a stage: in the middle a colored cross, in the two lateral openings, white, Maria and Johannes . In the excerpt from the altar the church patron, also painted white, Martin von Tours in the glory, at his feet the beggar and to the side two putti with Martin's attributes : goose and crook. A chronogram can be found on a cartridge above the cross: Ara / SanCto MartIno / eCCLesIae Patrono / De Vota. In the background of the crucifixion group is a painting by Johann Nepomuk Eberle, which completes the Calvary scene.

The two large side altars from 1735 by Dominikus Bergmüller from Türkheim are older than the high altar. The north side altar shows a representation of the rosary queen above the town of Marktoberdorf in the altarpiece. St. Dominic can be seen in the excerpt . St. Catherine of Alexandria is depicted in the southern side altar and St. Francis Xavier is depicted in the excerpt , of which a finger reliquary is shown in the lower part. The altar paintings on these side altars are by Johann Georg Wolcker from Augsburg.

On the other hand, the two choir side altars on the pillars of the antechamber are younger. They date from 1785 and show in the pictures in the northern Ulrich von Augsburg and in the southern Johannes Nepomuk .

Two artists worked on the frescoes on the ceiling of the church: the main cycle was created by the Kempten painter Franz Georg Hermann . The program relates to the Church's title, the cross. In a cartouche on the choir arch there is the chronogram , which names the title and patron of the church: CrVCIfIXI et DIVI MartInI honorIbVs ( In honor of the crucified and St. Martin ; = 1733). The apostle representations of the nave come from Balthasar Riepp from Kempten.

Piece

The stucco of the parish church of St. Martin stands on the threshold of the Rococo and was made by Abraham Bader from Wessobrunn .

characters

Particularly noteworthy are the four figures on the pillars of the vestibule by Anton Sturm from Füssen: Antonius von Padua , Johannes Nepomuk , Joachim and Anna. There is also a representation of Nikolaus von Myra (around 1700) in the nave and a modern representation of Saint Magnus von Füssen opposite .

Renovations

The parish church of St. Martin was redesigned in the classicistic style in the years 1856-1858, whereby only the colored stucco was painted over white. In 1936/37 the condition of the time of construction was restored. In the years 2004–2008 an exterior and interior renovation was carried out, which was completed in September 2008. The sculptor Joachim Kraus designed a folk altar, ambo and Easter candlestick.
