biography

origin

Peter von Schaumberg came from the Thuringian-Franconian noble family von Schaumberg . The starting point of the family is the ancestral castle Schaumburg in southern Thuringia on the border with Bavaria .

Career

After a schismatic election in 1423, Pope Martin V prevailed in 1424 with Peter von Schaumberg, canon of Würzburg and Bamberg . He is considered a peaceful sovereign who increased the prosperity of the diocese. He held two synods and issued numerous regulations for clergy and monasteries. His goals were to combat the decline in morals and the increasing secularization. He ensured that clergymen were ordained a priest only if they passed an examination on scientific content and at least the Summa rudium or Summa Mag. Joan. de Aurach ruled. Reforms were implemented in the Sankt Ulrich monastery under Abbot Melchior von Stamheim (1458–1474). He is said to have tackled grievances in the diocese less energetically towards the knight nobility.

The road between Augsburg and Füssen , past the Osteraufkirche , was expanded and paved by him. On March 13, 1446 he consecrated Johann III. von Eych to the bishop of Eichstätt .

Under Pope Martin V he was appointed treasurer , Eugene IV elevated him to cardinal , he apparently only received the cardinal's hat from Pope Nicholas V on his trip to Rome in 1450. Under Pope Paul II , he was a legate for the German area.

With increasing age, Pope Pius II placed his future successor Johann von Werdenberg at his side as coadjutor in 1463 . His epitaph (here also a cenotaph ) can be seen to this day in the east choir of Augsburg Cathedral , the deceased bishop is depicted as a skeleton on it.
