Buffy coat
The buffy coat (English buff : lederfarben, coat : layer, film), in German sometimes referred to as the leukocyte film , is the boundary layer between red blood cells and the blood plasma that is created when blood is mixed with an anticoagulant and allowed to sediment or im Centrifuged under an apheresis . The buffy coat consists mainly of white blood cells and platelets , it only makes up about one percent of the blood sample.
use
When a whole blood donation is processed into red cell concentrates and frozen fresh plasma products , the buffy coats are a by-product. The buffy coats can be enriched from white blood cells to produce platelet concentrates that can also be used in transfusion medicine . Some immunological or virological examinations of the leukocytes are also carried out with an isolated buffy coat.
