Sixun

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sixun is a French fusion band founded in 1984 .

Band and music

The band name is made up of "six" ( fr . : six) and "un" (fr .: one), so it is pronounced "Ssies-öhn". This refers to the six band members from all over the world who play together as a band. The regular line-up ( Paco Séry (drums, percussion), Jean-Pierre Como (keyboard), Alain Debiossat (saxophone), Louis Winsberg (guitar) and Michel Alibo (bass)) remained unchanged over the years, but the percussionists kept changing . These musicians also have solo projects and bring their different musical emphases to the band.

Due to the line-up with drums and percussion as well as Michel Alibo's often percussive bass playing, the music usually has a very rhythmic effect . The underlying patterns partly consist of complex polyrhythms . Influences of the musical origins of the band members can be clearly seen. In particular, African and Caribbean influences should be mentioned here. They interweave syllables over and over again.

With around 20,000 CDs sold per album they are among the more successful European fusion formations. Sixun broke up in 1998 after the ninth album ( Nouvelle Vague ). The band has been active again since 2005, has released CDs and a DVD and gives concerts.

Her current album Palabre is partly very orchestral and precisely worked through. The arrangements are by Pierre Bertrand , co-director of the Paris Jazz Big Band . In their advertising, they refer to themselves as the European version of Zawinul's Weather Report , to which they are quite similar, both in terms of the line-up and with individual musicians. On the current album, two accordions are used very effectively together with the saxophonist.
