Johann Eglof von Knöringen
Johann Eglof von Knöringen or Johannes Egolf von Knöringen (* July 25, 1537 ; † June 4, 1575 in Dillingen ) was Bishop of Augsburg from 1573 to 1575 and was appointed Count Palatine by the Emperor .
Johann Egolf from the Swabian ministerial family Knöringen had been a canon in Freising since 1547 and later (1552) in Augsburg. In 1559 he began his studies in Ingolstadt and continued this in Bologna and Freiburg . As a member of the Würzburg cathedral chapter, he held the office of cathedral holaster there from 1564, which he resigned in 1570 in favor of the later Würzburg prince-bishop, the young and self-proposed Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn . He was finally appointed Apostolic Protonotary in 1570 and elected Prince-Bishop of Augsburg in 1573. In the Augsburg interest rate dispute there were violent disputes with the Jesuits . Johann Egolf spoke out against the Reformation and tried to prevent its advance.
