Knöringen (also Knoeringen ) is the name of an old, originally Swabian noble family . Oberknöringen , the family seat, is now part of the town of Burgau an der Mindel in the Swabian district of Günzburg .

history

Wildenstein Castle was one of the family's ancestral seats until 1662

The family first appeared in a document in 1197 with Timeo von Knöringen as the Augsburg bishop's ministerial. The uninterrupted line of trunks begins with Konrad von Knöringen, who owned Knöringen and Jettingen in 1268. Members of the family were ministerials of the Margraves of Burgau . Hans von Knöringen became bailiff in the margraviate . Later the lords of Knöringen became servants and followers of the provost of Ellwangen , the bishops of Augsburg and the provost of Wettenhausen .

Significant members of the family have emerged who have gained great influence in both secular and spiritual offices.

Eglof of Knöringen († 1408) was dean of Speyer and prothonotary King Ruprecht I. For his loyal service improved him the King, dated May 24, 1404 his family crest to the effect of that on the white ring of the crest one out growing from a golden crown , black plume could be added.

During the Peasant War , a later Eglof von Knöringen was appointed field captain of the free imperial city of Augsburg and Wilhelm von Knöringen was captain of the Swabian Confederation from 1531 to 1534 .

Johann Eglof von Knöringen was bishop of Augsburg from 1573 to 1575 and Heinrich von Knöringen from 1599 to 1646. Marcus von Knöringen was the last abbot of Reichenau Abbey , who in 1540 gave up its independence to the Bishop of Constance .

Because of the rule Kreßberg with Lustenau (today Marktlustenau, district of Kreßberg) acquired in 1545 , the Lords of Knöringen were members of the Imperial Knighthood in the knight canton of Altmühl of the Franconian knight circle until 1805 and 1806 respectively . From 1605 to 1662 they were also matriculated because of the ownership of Wildenstein with Wildenstein Castle in the knight canton Kocher of the Swabian knight circle. In 1750 the family property was lost. With a diploma from 1669 they were raised to the baron status and registered in the Kingdom of Bavaria in the baron class of nobility in 1874 .

coat of arms

Family coat of arms

The family coat of arms shows a silver ring in black. On the helmet with black and silver covers the ring on a red pillow.

Since 1404, the coat of arms has shown the ring with a golden crown in the helmet ornament, which is decorated with three black ostrich feathers.

Local and municipal coats of arms

Elements from the family coat of arms of the von Knöringen family still appear in some Bavarian local and municipal coats of arms.

The coat of arms of the community of Allensbach in the district of Constance has been documented since 1512 and could go back to an award by the Reichenau abbot Markus von Knöringen as the local lord at the time; this would make the gold ring a variant of the Knöringer ring.
