Location of Freihalden in Jettingen-Scheppach

Freihalden is a district and a district of the Jettingen-Scheppach market in the Swabian district of Günzburg .

geography

The village is about 4.5 km east of Jettingen, in the Augsburg - Western Forests nature park , surrounded by forests. The district covers 522 hectares. The only flowing body of water near the village is the Erlenbach , a right tributary of the Mindel, which rises in the southeast of the village and then flows around it in the north.

history

Freihalden emerged as a clearing settlement in the first half of the 14th century; the first documentary mention was in 1352. It was created around the same time as the neighboring villages of Gabelbachergreut (1327) and Grünenbaindt (1324). The knight Hilpolt von Knöringen was probably the author and initiator of the clearing . Originally laid out as an anger village, ten farms were laid out on the lower side and eleven on the upper side, separated by the anger . This village complex is still clearly recognizable today, even if a number of properties have been divided over the years.

Freihalden belonged to the margraviate of Burgau , which belonged to the House of Habsburg between 1301 and 1805 . Thus Freihalden was in front of Austria , which was part of the Archduchy of Austria . The village was repeatedly badly affected in times of war, because it was on the old military and trade route from Augsburg to Ulm. In March 1634, during the Thirty Years War , it was pillaged and looted by the Swedes . The villagers had to flee, many died of starvation or the plague . The village was uninhabited and devastated until around 1650, before hesitant settlement began again. These new settlers were often exiles from Tyrol, Salzburg or Carinthia. As a result of the Third Coalition War under Napoleon , Freihalden came to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1806 .

Freihalden was incorporated into the Jettingen-Scheppach market on May 1, 1978 . On November 24, 2013, on Christ the King's Feast, the parish celebrated its double anniversary, 650 years of ordinary pastoral care and 550 years of its own pastor. The auxiliary bishop of Augsburg, Anton Losinger, celebrated the service. On November 16, 2014 the parish church was consecrated again by the diocesan bishop Konrad Zdarsa after renovation work. At the same time the ostensorium with relics of St. Pastor of Ars handed over. Furthermore, the three new church bells were baptized and blessed. On November 17, 2014, the bells that had been cast with poor post-war material and had become unusable were replaced.
