history

Gabelbachergreut is a planned late medieval clearing settlement , the original structure of which we can still clearly see today, although the appearance of the village has changed significantly over the centuries. Its formation falls in the second clearing period in Central Swabia. The knight Heinrich von Gabelbach, who owned the entire property, had the founding deed drawn up on Palm Sunday, April 5, 1327. As Reutmeister , the knight appointed Hermann von dem Hofe, who at that time was running a remote farm near the new village. He should make it to a size of 12 fiefs. In this position he was also the village chief and exercised the lower jurisdiction . From 1548 the village belonged to the cathedral monastery of Augsburg and was assigned to the Zusmarshausen care office. The secular domain of the cathedral chapter was designated with cathedral pen. This was thus also the sovereign. After the victory of the Swedes in the Thirty Years' War in 1632 near Rain am Lech, they moved into winter quarters in Ulm. From there they looted and pillaged the remote farming villages. So too does Gabelbachergreut, which like its neighboring town Freihalden , was completely destroyed and devastated. It was not until 1655 that it was rebuilt by settlers from Bohemia, Tyrol and Bavaria.

In 1737 the St. Leonhard's chapel was rebuilt. During the coalition wars, the village suffered great hardship due to billeting, forced deliveries and looting. After the " Reichsdeputationshauptschluss " in 1803, the cathedral monastery Augsburg lost the village to the Kingdom of Bavaria . As a result of the revolution in 1848, the farmers became not only owners but also owners of their farms. In 1875 the place name was officially changed from Gabelbachergreuth to Gabelbachergreut . From 1862 to 1929, Gabelbachergreut belonged to the district office of Zusmarshausen and from 1929 to the district office of Augsburg , which from 1939 was called the district of Augsburg .

In 1975 the land consolidation took place and on May 1, 1978 it was incorporated into the Zusmarshausen market.
