Gabelbach is a district of the Zusmarshausen market in the Swabian district of Augsburg . The parish village, located in the Augsburg-Westliche Wälder nature park , has, in addition to several historic residential buildings, one of the most important parish churches in the "Swabian Pfaffenwinkel".
The district includes the hamlet of Kleinried and the wasteland of Rücklenmühle .

geography

The place is southwest of the main town in the middle Zusamtal between Zusmarshausen and Dinkelscherben . Located directly on the Augsburg - Ulm railway line, it spreads out on the flatter west side of the valley below the wooded ridge between the Zusam- and Mindeltal valleys . In addition, the federal motorway 8 Munich - Stuttgart is only three kilometers away.

history

The foundation of Gabelbach probably took place under Franconian rule in the 8th century as a settlement of the "Gabilo am Bach". A document from 804 confirms the simultaneous donation of a property "Kapalbach" to the Hochstift Freising by the priest Cundhoh.

It is certain that the settlement came into the hands of the Lords of Gabelbach from 1263. This ministerial family , initially from the margravial Burgau , built a castle next to the church , the castle stables of which are only partially preserved. ( Gabelbach Castle Stables )

Their residence, founded in the 14th century on the forest knoll southwest of the place, from which the fiefs as servants of the Augsburg bishopric ruled the place, was more extensive . A well-preserved, two-part castle stable still tells of the existence of the ministerial.

After the Lords of Gabelbach died out in the late Middle Ages, the place first went to the knight Hartmann von Burgau, later partly to the Counts of Helfenstein, before the Augsburg Heilig-Geist-Spital acquired the entire place. As his property, the place was the seat of an upper bailiff, in which the land and lower court rule was exercised for centuries. Only after secularization in 1803, in 1806, Gabelbach went to the Kingdom of Bavaria .

From 1862 to 1929, Gabelbach belonged to the district office of Zusmarshausen and from 1929 to the district office of Augsburg , which from 1939 was called the district of Augsburg .

On May 1, 1978, in the course of the municipal reform, the incorporation of Gabelbach into Zusmarshausen took place.
