Haberturm

The octagonal Haberturm was one of the oldest parts of the Königsberg Castle .

history

The fortifications and castle construction work of the order began soon after the mountain plateau took possession of the mountain plateau in 1255. First, an earth wall castle was built, which later retained the character of a fore-bailey. At the same time, however, work began on the main castle, which was so well-fortified that it withstood a three-year siege in the great Prussian uprising of 1260. After the Battle of the Durbe, work began on building a double curtain wall, which was interrupted by nine defense towers. Of these towers, only the Haberturm, located on the northeast corner, had survived in its original form until the castle was destroyed. A Tonplatteninschrift said that he from Samland was built Vogt Dietrich of Liedelau (1278-1292). The Duke Albrecht monument , twice life size, was executed by Friedrich Reusch and unveiled in 1891 in the presence of the imperial couple at the Haberturm. In 1935 it was banished to the tower of the furrier for "traffic-related" reasons. The replica is now on the (leveled) Kneiphof .

description

Located on the northeast corner, it flanked the building facing Schlossstrasse and Münzplatz. It thus formed the very distinctive tower of the Münzplatz and could also be clearly seen from the adjacent castle pond . As the only surviving corner tower, it was attached from the outside to the existing defensive wall, probably at the same time as the granary (Higher Regional Court) built on the courtyard side. A ground floor made of fieldstone masonry rose on a foundation shoulder that was about 50 centimeters projecting below the surface of the earth, with the brick tower above it. The floor plan is a somewhat irregular octagon. The original floor plan - apart from the barrel-vaulted ground floor - was lost over time. Stairs were installed later, some of which were in the wall and formed the entrances to the Königsberg Higher Regional Court . Immediately in front of the tower was the Duke Albrecht monument. Next to it stood the Albrechtsbau, in which the higher regional court was housed.
