Replica on the Kant Island

The Herzog-Albrecht monument stood at the Haberturm of the Königsberg Castle. A replica has been standing by Königsberg Cathedral since 2007. The statue shows Duke Albrecht twice life size.

history

The original bronze statue was created in 1891 by the sculptor Friedrich Reusch , who teaches at the Königsberg Art Academy . Originally, all important sovereigns at Königsberg Castle were to be honored with monuments. Duke Albrecht of Prussia made the last Grand Master of the Teutonic Order the German Teutonic Knights to Duchy , built the Albertus University and was the first German prince , the Reformation one. Königsberg became the stronghold of Orthodox Lutheranism .

The monument was unveiled at the Haberturm in 1891 in the presence of the German imperial couple - Wilhelm II and Auguste Viktoria . The polished granite block that formed the base bore the inscription :

ALBERT OF BRANDENBURG - LAST HIGH MASTER - FIRST DUKE IN PRUSSIA

It was considered the prince's most successful monument.

“Kaiser Wilhelm II took part in the ceremony. He was introduced to the builder of the monument and expressed his appreciation. The celebration consisted of a sermon by General Superintendent Poetz, a speech by Professor Prutz and the subsequent parade march by the troops of the Königsberg garrison . The brilliant picture presented by the assembled crowd, the military music and the following march by the soldiers in their colorful uniforms left unforgettable impressions for all spectators. This memorial contributed to making Königsberg what it was to later contemporaries. While a dry moat with gardens had previously stretched to the rear of Junkerstraße on the north side of the castle, Schloßstraße was now laid out between Münzplatz and Gesekusplatz and was soon to be built on. "

- Siegfried Schindelmeiser

Because of the unpopular religious attitude of the sitter during the Nazi era , the memorial was banished to the north-western round tower of the castle in Schloßstraße in 1935. The monument was destroyed in the battle for Königsberg . For the 750th anniversary of Königsberg (2005), the Königsberg Foundation donated a replica of the monument to the city of Kaliningrad. The base of the destroyed monument still exists, the statue of Lenin on it since the war has been replaced by the Albrecht replica. The memorial was erected in 2007 on the southeast corner of the cathedral.
