Helfenstein City Palace

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The former Helfenstein City Palace was originally a two-winged building from the 13th century in Geislingen an der Steige in the Göppingen district in Baden-Württemberg .

history

The castle was probably built in the 13th century as a two-wing building in the northeast corner of the city fortifications, with the east wing sitting directly on the corner of the city wall. It served as the city palace of the Counts of Helfenstein , who also owned a castle above Geislingen. In 1380 the Helfenstein Castle was first mentioned in a contract of the so-called Wilhelmsbund , a defense alliance of various nobles. In 1396 the city of Geislingen passed to the imperial city of Ulm . The castle became the residence and official seat of the Ulmischen Vogts and from 1635 only the seat of the visor, an office for the determination of liquid quantities and the collection of the wine tax , as well as the reverser and the upper office counter-writer . After the transition to Geislingens Württemberg , the building was the seat of the Kameralamts of Oberamts Geislingen or its successor, the tax office of the city Geislingen. In 1821 and 1822, the north wing of the castle had to be demolished due to disrepair. In the early 1970s, the remaining east wing was fundamentally rebuilt. Today, the technical offices of the city of Geislingen are located in the Helfenstein City Palace.
