Spitzberg Castle is the ruin of a classic medieval aristocratic castle of the summit castle type west of Kuchen in the Göppingen district in Baden-Württemberg .
Geographical location
The ruin stands on the southern edge of the Filstal , on the 665 meter high peak mountain. Only a few remains of the wall remain from the castle.
history
The family of the Spitzenberger, who belonged to the relatives of the Zähringer and the Counts of Helfenstein , named themselves after her . A well-known representative of the family was Bishop Gottfried von Spitzenberg .
Today the castle shows itself as a neglected ruin, which still shows the traces of an excavation by the Swabian Alb Association in 1913 under Konrad Albrecht Koch. The most important finds from this excavation are lost. They were kept in cakes in the town hall for a long time before they were thrown away during a renovation. Parts of the finds are in the Geislingen Local History Museum. Most of the finds date to the late 14th century, but the castle is said to have been destroyed as early as 1311.
