Berthouville is a commune with 312 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Eure in the region of Normandy .

geography

Berthouville is located on the RN 13 between Lisieux and Évreux on the eastern edge of the Lieuvin , 11 kilometers northeast of Bernay and 6.1 kilometers west of the canton capital Brionne . Berthouville includes the hamlets of Le Villeret, Le Marabout, Le Plessis, Le Marché Neuf and La Marotte.

In Berthouville there is a risk that Marnières , old marl pits , could cause a landslide . The 1.5 to 2 meters wide and several meters deep holes can be created after heavy rain, for example. There are openings in the access shafts, the debris filling of which was washed into the side passages. The ceilings of the mining shafts can also collapse, creating wider holes.

history

The hamlet of Villeret was on the Roman road from Brionne (Breviodurum) to Le Mans (Subdinum) . The village was founded in the 8th or 9th century, but was first mentioned in a document in 1198. A certain Gautier de Berthouville was seigneur of the place at that time .

In the 16th century, the noble Huguenot Noël Cotton was seigneur of Berthouville. He became secretary of King Charles IX in 1560 . in Rouen , and as such belonged to the administration. In the turmoil of the First Huguenot War , he was charged with lese majesty and executed on October 30, 1562.

Michel Morin was Ecuyer , landlord of Cauvigny and gendarme de la garde of the king since 1605. He received the Berthouville fief in 1630. In 1638 he was ennobled. He had a mansion built across from the church .

Jean Le Grix de Belleuvre et de Neuville was a pastor in Berthouville. In 1672 he set up a foundation with which he supported, among other things, a school for boys and catechizing on Sundays. In 1791 this foundation still existed, which brought in 465 livre , the Abbot Le Grix de la Fontenaye was its director.

In 1770 Auguste-Philippe-Charles Morin sold his Berthouville fiefdom to Louis-Jaques Grossin Comte de Bouville (born September 22, 1759).

An old spelling from 1793 for Berthouville was Bertouville . Berthouville has had its own municipal administration since 1793 during the French Revolution .

In 1830, in the hamlet of Villeret, which belongs to Berthouville, a depository find of silver artifacts from the 2nd century was found, the so-called treasure of Berthouville . In 1896, the Gallo-Roman foundations of Canetonum were discovered at the site .

Berthouville had the most inhabitants in 1806 (891), after which the community lost more and more inhabitants. In 1990 the village only had 233 inhabitants.

Culture and sights

Manoir de Berthouville

At the Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre there are two large yew trees classified as site classé (natural monument). The church was enlarged in the 19th century. The church's altarpiece is from the 17th century and the choir desk was made in 1672. The choir desk has the shape of a griffin and bears the coat of arms of the Legris de La Fontelaye family. It was classified as a Monument historique in 2005 . There are several statues in the church. A statue of Saint Chrodechild (474-544) is still venerated today as a miracle worker. The believers tie white ribbons around the statue's right wrist and ask for the protection of their children from diseases.

The Manoir du Berthouville dates from the 17th century, the architrave above the entrance door flanked by columns bears the date 1652. It stands at the end of an avenue whose last trees are giant sequoias that were planted at the beginning of the 20th century. The manoir is privately owned.

The Demeure d'Harsancourt dates from the 13th century. It is privately owned.

Sports

The Moto Club Berthouvillais maintains a motocross course near Berthouville, on which events are held several times a year as part of the "Norman Championship ".
