Albrecht Philipp Thaer (born May 22, 1794 in Celle ; † October 6, 1863 in Möglin ), the third son of the agricultural scientist Albrecht Daniel Thaer , was a German agronomist.

Life

In 1804 he came to Prussia with his parents and attended the grammar school at the Gray Monastery in Berlin. In 1813 he took part in the wars of freedom . After a serious wound in his right arm, he returned to his parents' house. From 1814 to 1817 he supported his father as an estate inspector in Möglin . From 1818 to 1827 he managed the estates of Prince Michał Gedeon Radziwiłł in Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine with great success . In 1827 he married Conradine Oelsner (1805-1828), daughter of the Silesian textile entrepreneur Johann Wilhelm Oelsner , in Breslau , and moved with her to his newly acquired Lüdersdorf estate, where she died the following year as a result of childbirth.

In 1830 Thaer took over the Möglin manor and at the same time the management of the Royal Prussian Academy of Agriculture , which he headed in the spirit of his father until it was liquidated and incorporated into the Berlin Agricultural Training Institute in 1861. A year later he married his sister-in-law, Julie Oelsner (1809-1860).

In 1834 he acquired the “Schwarze Vorwerk” Altgaul (later called “Thaerhof”) belonging to the city of Wriezen , and in 1839 the Börnicke manor near Bernau. The former domain office Rüdersdorf was added to these possessions in 1842, with the establishment of the manor Rüdersdorf with 2000 acres of land in Rüdersdorf , Herzfelde and Hennickendorf .

Gustav von Brenn , Minister of the Interior for Commercial Affairs, asked King Friedrich Wilhelm III in January 1835 . To give "the landowner Albrecht Thaer" the title of "Landes-Oeconomie-Raths". The reasoning stated "that he should also be supported externally by an acknowledgment supporting the effectiveness of his achievements, and his influence on the pupils should be supported by an appropriate position against the other teachers of the institute." In the same month the king gave his consent .

Thaer was an outstanding practical farmer. He gave numerous practice-oriented lectures at the annual " Meetings of German Farmers and Foresters ". His scientific activity was essentially limited to personal instruction as a teacher.

His oldest son was the agricultural scientist Albrecht Conrad Thaer .
