Francisc. le Moine

François Lemoyne , occasionally François Le Moine (* 1688 in Paris ; † 4. June 1737 ) was a French painter of the Rococo .

Live and act

Lemoyne was the son of a coachman at the French court. Shortly after his father's death, his mother married Robert le Vrac , known as "Tournières". From this Lemoyne received his first short artistic lessons.

At the age of 13 Lemoyne came to the Académie Royale in his hometown in 1701 . There he became a student of Louis Galloche and remained so until 1713. In the last few years Lemoyne was more of Galloche's assistant. In 1711 Lemoyne was awarded the "Prix de Rome" by the Academy; but without any amount of money, so that the actually associated stay in Rome was canceled.

In 1722 Lemoyne met François Berger . According to his own admission, he was very influenced by this. In the years 1723 to 1724 the two undertook a study trip, which took them via Bologna and Rome to Naples and via Venice back to France. Correggio's work left the greatest impression .

In Paris, Lemoyne settled as a freelance artist. Among his students are u. a. François Boucher , Charles Joseph Natoire and Donat Nonotte should be mentioned. From 1731 to 1737 Laurent Cars also became a student in Lemoyne's studio. After he had already been accepted as a member of the Académie Royale in 1718, it appointed him professor in 1733.

In the years 1733 to 1736 Lemoyne created the ceiling painting in the ballroom of Versailles Palace , which is also called Hercules Salon after the subject of the painting. As a reward - in addition to payment - he should be awarded the title “First Court Painter”. He could not accept this honor anymore because he had been delusional for some time. In 1737 he was so paranoid that he committed suicide by stabbing himself during a seizure .

The ceiling paintings were the focus of Lemoyne's artistic work. Examples of this are the monumental ceiling painting in the choir of the Jacobin Church (Paris, 1723) and that in the ballroom of Versailles Palace.
