Louis Galloche

Louis Galloche (born August 24, 1670 in Paris , † July 21, 1761 in Paris) was a French painter. He is best known as a teacher of important painters such as François Lemoyne , Charles-Joseph Natoire and François Boucher .

Life

Louis Galloche was intended for a spiritual career by his father, a woodcarver. When he was thirteen he received the tonsure . Because of his talent, he left theology and entered the painting school of Louis de Boulogne. In 1695 his picture, The Sons of Jacob Bringing Joseph's Skirt to Their Father, was awarded a first prize. After a stay in Italy, he returned to Paris, where he opened his own painting school.

In 1711 he was accepted into the Académie Royale , appointed professor in 1720, rector in 1746 and chancellor in 1754. Galloche created numerous paintings with historical and religious motifs. After he could no longer paint due to health problems at the age of 80, he wrote five discourses that were read at the academy's conferences.
