Rock Falls is located on the south bank of the Rock River , around 45 km east of the Mississippi . The Wisconsin border runs approximately 85 km north. The place is at 41 ° 46'47 "north latitude and 89 ° 41'20" west longitude and extends over 9 km². Rock Falls is the center of Coloma Township .
Rock Falls is across from Sterling , which is on the opposite bank of the Rock River. Other neighboring towns are Nelson (9.6 km west), Tampico (23 km southwest) and Prophetstown (26.3 km west southwest).

In the urban area of Rock Falls, US Highway 30 crosses Illinois State Route 40 , which comes to Rock Falls over a bridge from the northern neighboring city of Sterling. All other roads are subordinate partly unpaved roads as well as inner-city roads.
