The Markinkele ( 2545  m slm , Italian : Cornetto di confine ; also known as Marchkinkele or Marchginggele ) is a peak in the southern Villgraten mountains on the border between South Tyrol ( Italy ) and East Tyrol ( Austria ).

Surname

In the 1919 peace treaty of Saint-Germain , the Markinkele is expressly mentioned as the new Italian-Austrian border mountain. The Italian name Cornetto di Confine (border horn) was created by Ettore Tolomei at the beginning of the 20th century to underpin Italy's claims on South Tyrol. It was then officially introduced in the 1920s and underlines the character of the mountain, precisely marking the border between Italy and Austria.

tourism

The Markinkele offers views u. a. on the two larger of the Three Peaks . Mountain bikers can reach the mountain from Toblach through the Silvestertal on old military roads (access for other vehicles is not permitted) and then continue over the Hochrast back into the valley towards Sillian . The Markinkele can also be reached from Innervillgraten on foot and in winter with touring skis .

Since 2020 there has been a refuge at the summit of the Markinkele, the Marchhütte . These are three renovated buildings that were built in the 1930s as part of the Alpine Wall to house soldiers.
