Thomas Backus

Thomas Backus (* 1800 ; †  1858 ) was an American politician . Between 1849 and 1850 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Connecticut .

Career

The sources on Thomas Backus are very poor. Neither his exact dates of birth and death nor the places of birth and death are known. Nothing is known about his school education or his career beyond politics. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party founded by Andrew Jackson . He was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1829 and 1833 ; In 1835 and 1838 he was elected to the State Senate.

In 1849 Backus was elected lieutenant governor of Connecticut alongside Joseph Trumbull . He held this office until 1850. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. After the end of his time as Lieutenant Governor, his trail is lost. It is only noted in the sources that he died in 1858.
