history

The story of Aginskoye begins in 1781, when this semi-nomadic living Buryat settled. The actual foundation of the town with the erection of permanent buildings took place in 1811. The name is derived from the name of the Aga river.

With the establishment of the Autonomous Okrug of the Agin Buryats on September 26, 1937, the place became its administrative center, with the division of the district into three Rajons in 1941 also the administrative center of one of them.

In 1959 the status of urban-type settlement was given.

Since the dissolution of the Autonomous Okrug as a federal subject on March 1, 2008, Aginskoye has been the normal district administrative seat of the Transbaikalia region, but also the center of the autonomous Okrug, which continues to exist as a special administrative area within the region.
