The Onon ( Russian Онон ; Mongolian Онон гол Onon gol ) is the 1032 km long right source river of the Shilka in East Asia .
It has its source in Mongolia in the Khentii Mountains . Within Mongolia, the Onon has a length of 296 km and is therefore in 19th place among the rivers in Mongolia. From the Khentii Mountains it flows in a north-easterly direction to Russia and later unites with the Ingoda to form the Shilka.
The Kherlen rises about 45 km further south from the headwaters of the Onon . Larger tributaries of the Onon are: Churach-Gol , Borsja , Unda , Baldschi-Gol , Aguza , Kyra , Ilja and Aga .
