A Tale in the Desert , formerly published in Germany under the name Kemet - A Tale in the Desert , is an MMORPG with 3D graphics that simulates the structure of a civilization similar to ancient Egypt . The player must advance both himself and the gaming community in various disciplines.

The goal of the community of players is to pass seven tests in each of seven disciplines. The background story is about the conflict of a "stranger" who bet with the Pharaoh (the in-game character of the developer Andrew (Andy) Tepper) that the gaming community would not achieve this goal. Pluribus has held the office of Pharaoh since April 2014 .

Game concept / special features

A Tale in the Desert / ATITD differs from other MMORPGs in that it does without monsters and any combat, as well as largely without experience points . Instead, players can improve their skills in the seven disciplines by passing various tests. Some of these tests are very difficult and lengthy, so the demands on long-term motivation are correspondingly high.

Another special feature is the limited duration. While other online games create a permanent virtual world in principle and usually seek to keep the player for years to come in this world, is ATITD in the form of tellings - that is a story - designed. Approximately 1.5 years of playing time can be expected per story. Telling VI expires in 2014 and Pluribus Games took over planning for Telling VII at the beginning of May 2014.

Another special feature is the possibility for players to propose new rules and laws themselves, which can be voted on and which Pharaoh then incorporates into the game (unless he vetoed for technical or gaming reasons). Various potentially destructive technologies, such as completely cutting down trees for quick logging or turning normal lakes into sulphurous ones, were restricted by the players themselves with their own rules. Unpleasant players have also been banned from the game. By the way, Pharaoh is an existing game character and can be addressed directly by every player in-game. Andrew "Teppy" Tepper is the boss of the company eGenesis and a developer to "touch", just like all other developers and game masters. Since the beginning of 2014 Andrew Tepper has handed over the development and management of the game to Pluribus, long-time game master, developer and CEO of Pluribus Games .

Crafting

The main occupation (at least in terms of the time required) of the player in Kemet is crafting, i.e. the production of objects that he or other players need in the game (mostly for tests or research). In this regard, Kemet is very diverse. Employment opportunities range from collecting mud and clay to breeding various animals and plants to operating complex machines, for example for the production of charcoal. Many of these activities take place in real time and require a certain degree of skill from the player, ie if the charcoal is not adequately ventilated or cooled, it burns or goes out, which forces the player to concentrate for about 5 minutes. Skilled players who can operate several charcoal stoves at the same time have a great advantage when it comes to procurement of resources and goods.

Many things can practically only be achieved with the cooperation of different players with a reasonably tolerable expenditure of time. This necessity results in a division of labor between the players.

Many goods also require that you find out the best method for making them yourself. For example, there are several almost scientific studies by the players about the optimal production of ashes through the controlled burning of papyrus and leeks in wood fires.

Research: schools and universities

Society as a whole evolves in ATITD by conducting research that introduces new skills, buildings, machines, or resources into the game. The research takes place at universities, which, however, require large amounts of resources before the respective research is approved. After the research is approved, anyone in the associated schools can learn the skills.

Many things have to be further developed and / or researched by the players themselves. So there are z. B. Opportunities to breed more productive flax varieties by crossing or simply to develop more beautiful flowers.
