Joseph-Émile Abbet CRA (born October 23, 1847 in Vollèges , † August 3, 1914 in Monthey ) was a Swiss Roman Catholic clergyman and abbishop of the Corporal Abbey of Saint-Maurice .

Life

He was the son of the farmer and carpenter François-Florentin Abbet and his wife Marie-Angèle nee. Terrettaz. He received his education at the College of Saint-Maurice. Under the influence of his pastor Joseph Paccolat , who also taught him Latin, he entered the novitiate of the Abbey of Saint-Maurice in 1867 and made his profession in 1868 .

Joseph-Émile Abbet received the sacrament of ordination for the order of Augustinian Canons on October 28, 1871 . From 1872 to 1873 he was vicar in Bagnes . Called back to Saint-Maurice, he taught at the college there from 1873 to 1904. In 1904 he was elected prior and novice master of Saint-Maurice by the chapter of the order , on April 21, 1909 he was elected abbot of the monastery (his opponent Joseph Mariétan was considered too young). Pope Pius X then appointed him titular bishop of Bethlehem , the traditional seat of the abbots of Saint-Maurice since 1840.

Abbet's short abbatiat is mainly characterized by the good relations with his relative Jules-Maurice Abbet , Bishop of Sitten, who also ordained him bishop, and extensive construction work, which he did not see to be completed in all cases. Among other things, a new pigsty and several mountain stables were built in Champéry (1913) and in the monastery the boarding wing with the refectory, several study rooms and a new novitiate, the construction of which led to displeasure in the convent. In 1910, Abbot Joseph made his canons swear the so-called anti-modernist oath demanded by Pope Pius X. and urged them to be vigilant in accordance with the specifications of the Encyclical Pascendi of 1907. His loyalty to Rome probably also led to his death in October 1910 (according to Catholic-hierarchy only after the death of Bishop Joseph Déruaz in September 1911) was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Lausanne and Geneva in Friborg by Pope Pius X , which resulted in an absence of several months from the abbey, which was meanwhile managed by Prior Pierre Bourban (1854– 1920) was directed. After the election of Bishop André Bovet in November 1911, released from his (unloved) task, he returned to Saint-Maurice, but still assisted on February 13, 1912 with the consecration of the new bishop.

Mgr Abbet died on August 3, 1914, suffering from asthma and heart problems for a long time.
