Pierre Bourban

Pierre Alexandre Bourban (born April 17, 1854 in Haute-Nendaz , † September 22, 1920 in Saint-Maurice VS ) was a Swiss Augustinian canon , prior of the Abbey of Saint-Maurice and amateur archaeologist.

Life

Born in Haut-Nendaz (Wallis) in 1854 as the son of the merchant Jean-Pierre Bourban and Marguerite b. Délèze, Pierre Bourban attended the College in Sion and then the Grande École of the regulated Augustinian Canons of Saint-Maurice in Bagnes . In 1872 he entered the novitiate of the Abbey of Saint-Maurice, made his vows in 1876 and was ordained a priest in 1877 by the then Abbot Étienne-Barthélémy Bagnoud (1803-1888). For a short time he worked as a teacher at the collegiate school, then vicar in the parish of Bagnes, but was called back to the monastery by his superiors in 1881 to teach canon law and church history as well as dogmatics . At the same time he held the position of archivist and studied history and archeology at the University of Freiburg and in Rome from 1890 to 1899 . After the death of Abbot Joseph Paccolat , the Chapter Assembly appointed him vicarius capitularis in 1909 and after the election of the new Abbot Joseph Abbet as Prior. In 1912 Bourban resigned from this office in order to be able to devote himself entirely to his humanitarian work and scientific research. In 1915 he was elected prior a second time.

Bourban was often active in the social field, as head of the orphanage in Vérolliez and founder of the retirement asylum and the St-Arne clinic in Saint-Maurice in 1901. Since the mid-1890s, he worked - initially together with the engineer Jules Michel († 1902) - with the exploration of the past of the abbey and the place of Saint-Maurice (the ancient Acaunum) through extensive systematic excavations, the results of which he published in the local daily press ( L'ami du peuple , Gazette du Valais , Le Nouvelliste valaisan , La Liberté ) reported. He was in contact with important scholars such as Theodor Mommsen in Berlin and Giovanni Battista de Rossi in Rome. He was a member of the Société d'histoire de la Suisse Romande, the Swiss Society for the Conservation of Historical Art Monuments, President of the Société helvétique de Saint-Maurice, founder and president of the Valais Section of Homeland Security , and honorary member of the Société d'histoire du Valais Romand. He was also a member of the cantonal monuments commission. The Antiquarian Museum of Saint-Maurice owes its creation and furnishing to his initiative.

He died on September 22nd, 1920 (Mauritian Day) as a result of a heart attack or stroke during the office in the Abbey Church of Saint-Maurice.
