Charles Morerod OP (born October 28, 1961 in Riaz , Switzerland ) is a Swiss religious , theologian and dogmatist and Roman Catholic bishop of Lausanne, Geneva and Friborg .

Life

Charles Morerod studied Roman Catholic theology at the Swiss University of Friborg . 1983 Morerod joined the religious order of the Dominicans at. In 1987 he obtained a licentiate in theology from Jean-Pierre Torrell , a well-known Thomist . In 1988 he was ordained a priest . From 1987 to 1989 he worked as a pastor in Geneva in the parish of Saint-Paul. From 1991 to 1994 he was a university chaplain in Freiburg. He received his doctorate in 1994, his doctoral supervisor was Liam Walsh . In the same year he began teaching theology in Freiburg on behalf of Guido Vergauwen . In 1996 he obtained his degree in philosophy from Evandro Agazzi . This was followed by teaching positions at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum, 1996), in Lugano (1999–2002) and in Guam (2007). At the Angelicum he was Vice Dean of the Faculty of Theology (until 2003), Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy (December 2003 to August 2009) and, since September 2009, Joseph Agius's successor as its Rector. He was appointed full professor on March 30, 2010. In his office as rector of the Angelicum he was succeeded on March 26, 2012 by Miroslav Adam Konštanc OP.

On November 3, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Charles Morerod as Bishop of Lausanne, Geneva and Friborg. The episcopal ordination took place on December 11th, 2011 in the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Freiburg by Georges Cardinal Cottier OP; Co-consecrators were the then prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith William Joseph Cardinal Levada and the Geneva Auxiliary Bishop Pierre Farine .

Since 1997 Morerod has acted as editor of the French-language edition of the philosophical-theological journal Nova et Vetera . He is a consultor (external expert) of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and a member of the International Mixed Commission for theological dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church (since 2005), the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas von Aquin (since 2008) and General Secretary of the International Theological Commission (since 2008). Since October 2009 he has participated as deputy head of the Roman delegation of theologians in the faith talks with representatives of the traditionalist Pius Brotherhood . He is a recognized expert on the work and life of Thomas Aquinas and a committed ecumenist.

Charles Morerod, previously Vice-President of the Swiss Bishops' Conference (SBK) , was elected President of the SBK on September 2, 2015 to succeed Markus Büchel , Bishop of St. Gallen. He takes office on January 1, 2016 and is elected for the 2016–2018 term.

In 2015 he was appointed Grand Officer of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick Cardinal O'Brien . It was invested on October 17, 2015 by Pier Giacomo Grampa , Grand Prior of the Swiss Lieutenancy , and appointed Prior of the Suisse Romande Section. He has been the Grand Prior of the Swiss Lieutenancy since 2018.

Morerod was inducted into the office of General President on October 20, 2016 at the general assembly of the Catholica Unio Internationalis , the Pontifical Eastern Church Organization.

On October 28, 2016, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Order of the Sacraments .
