Huichol [ wit͡ʃoːl ] or Wixárika Niukiyari is an indigenous language in northern Mexico , spoken by the Huichol ethnic group , who call themselves Wixártari (singular: Wixárika ) ('people'). It belongs to the southern branch of the Uto-Aztec languages and is most closely related to the Cora language.

It is often said that the name Huichol derives from a foreign name of neighboring tribes for the Wixártari and means 'healer', since they were generally known by the tribes as particularly good shamans and knowledgeable botanists and physicians. The French ethnologist, León Diguet, claimed the name was derived from the Guachichil language and meant "those who cultivate the fields". According to a Wixártari shaman named Yauxali, their personal name means "who dress in honor of their ancestors".

According to the 2010 census, Wixárika Niukiyari is spoken by around 37,000 people in the Sierra Madre Occidental , mainly in the states of Jalisco and Nayarit , and to a lesser extent in the southeast of Durango and Zacatecas .
