Felix Gmür (born June 7, 1966 in Lucerne ) is a Swiss clergyman , Roman Catholic theologian and Bishop of Basel .

Life

Felix Gmür comes from a Lucerne family with four brothers, including the CEO of the Helvetia insurance group , Philipp Gmür , and the CVP politician Thomas Gmür. His youngest brother Peter Gmür runs the 125-year-old family-owned transport company Gmür & Co.

Between 1986 and 1997 , Gmür studied philosophy , Catholic theology and art history at the Munich University of Philosophy and the Universities of Munich , Paris, Rome and Freiburg (Switzerland) . In 1997 he was awarded the title of Dr. with his work “Aesthetics with Ludwig Wittgenstein : about saying and showing”. phil. PhD . On May 30, 1999, he was ordained a priest in Lucerne by the Bishop of Basel, Kurt Koch . Between 1997 and 2001 Gmür was a pastor in the parish of St. Anton in Basel . After studying Biblical Studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome from 2001 to 2004, he was Subregens in the St. Beat Seminary in Lucerne until 2006 ; During this time he also worked as a priestly assistant in the parishes of Menzingen and Neuheim . On September 8, 2010, he was elected by the 18-member Basel Cathedral Chapter to succeed Kurt Koch, who was appointed to the Roman Curia . Pope Benedict XVI confirmed this election on November 23 of the same year; Gmür's appointment was announced at the same time in Solothurn , the seat of the Basel diocese, and in the Vatican . The episcopal consecration took place on January 16, 2011 in the Martinskirche in Olten - the actually intended St. Ursenkathedrale in Solothurn could not be restored in time after an arson attack shortly before - in the presence of many ecclesiastical and secular dignitaries by his predecessor Kurt Cardinal Koch. Felix Gmür's motto Intelligentes quae sit voluntas Domini ("Understand what the will of the Lord is") comes from Paul's letter to the Ephesians ( Eph 5:17  EU ). Since 2015 Gmür has been responsible for the episcopal national commission “Justitia et Pax”.

Felix Gmür was elected President of the Swiss Bishops' Conference on September 3, 2018. He took office on January 1, 2019.

For student days, Gmür has been a member of the AKV Alemannia Freiburg (Switzerland) , the AV Helvetia Romana Rome and the AV Helvetia Monacensis Munich of the Swiss Student Association . He also became a member of the Catholic student association KDSt.V. while studying in Munich . Vindelicia Munich in the CV . Positions

In February 2019, Gmür declared that the celibacy of priests should be discussed . The power structures have to change, celibacy is being questioned and the position of women in the church needs change. In September 2019 Gmür endorsed the blessing of same-sex couples in the diocese of Basel.
