Jakob Stammler

Jakob Stammler , also Jakobus Stammler (born June 2, 1840 in Bremgarten AG , † April 17, 1925 in Solothurn ) was a Swiss art historian and Roman Catholic bishop of Basel .

Life

The son of a butcher attended the Einsiedeln monastery high school and then studied theology and art history in Mainz and Leuven . From 1864 to 1876 he worked as a pastor in Oberrüti and then in Bern , where the Trinity Church was built on his initiative . In 1903 he published his work The Care of Art in Canton Aargau and a textbook on church history, and in the same year he was awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy by the University of Freiburg .

In 1906 Jakob Stammler was appointed Bishop of Basel and Lugano by Pope Pius X. He was ordained bishop on September 30, 1906, by the then Bishop of Chur , Johannes Fidelis Battaglia .

In 1908 he published a diocesan hymn book. Stammler was responsible for the new building of the seminary in Lucerne, which was completed in 1923 . Bishop Stammler was chairman of the Swiss Bishops' Conference (SBK) from 1918 to 1924 .
