Moritz Fabian Roten

Moritz Fabian Roten (born April 8, 1783 in Raron ; † August 11, 1843 in Sion ) was a Swiss Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Sion .

Life

He came from a middle-class family, his father Nikolaus Roten (1754–1839) was u. a. Mayor of Raron, his older brother Anton (1780-1845) was the Spanish General Field Marshal and Governor of Barcelona.

Moritz Fabian Roten received his education at the college in Brig and in Sion as well as at the seminary in Gerunden. He was ordained priest on September 21, 1807 and was subsequently vicar at the Church of St. German in Raron. In 1810 he became pastor of Unterbäch and Bürchen .

Moritz Fabian Roten was elected Bishop of Sion on March 18, 1830, and papal confirmation took place on July 5 of the same year. He was ordained a bishop on August 24, 1830, by the Apostolic Nuncio in Switzerland, Archbishop Filippo de Angelis . The consecration assistant was the Abbot of Saint-Maurice , François de Rivaz CRA . In 1835 Moritz Fabian Roten became papal assistant to the throne . During his thirteen-year term as bishop, which fell into the historical phase of regeneration , there were violent political disputes, especially between the Upper and Lower Valais .
