Augustin Sulpiz Zen Ruffinen (born April 21, 1765 in Leuk , † December 21, 1829 in Sion ) was a Swiss clergyman and bishop of Sion.

Life

Augustin Sulpiz Zen Ruffinen was the son of Johann Stephan Joseph Zen Ruffinen (* July 5, 1733; † unknown), familiars of the Bishop of Sion and his wife Marie Christine (* November 2, 1734 in Sion ; † unknown), daughter of Nicolas Gabriel de Torrenté (1688–1736), notary. His two brothers were:

  • Franz Josef Zen Ruffinen (* 1763; † 13 July 1812), notary and Grosskastlan , married to Anne Marie (* unknown; † 18 August 1837 in Leukerbad ), daughter of Kaspar Eugen von Stockalper (1750-1826), governor of the Valais ;
  • Alex Zen Ruffinen (born June 3, 1767 in Leuk; † September 13, 1827 ibid), judge, Grosskastlan and President of the Zehnden von Leuk, married to Casilda (1770–1837), daughter of Christian Theodul von Roten (1733–1784), Meier von Raron , Grosskastlan von Lötschen and a captain in Spanish service.

Augustin Sulpiz was the nephew of Franz Joseph Melchior Zen Ruffinen (1729–1790), Bishop of Sitten.

He attended the quorum in Sion and the seminary in Gerunden . In 1790 he was ordained a priest and in the same year appointed titular dome of Sitten. The following year he continued his education in Annecy . From 1793 to 1794 he was a parish assistant in Visp and then resident canon in Sion. In 1801 he became professor at the college in Sion and taught there until 1805. In 1810 he was appointed general procurator and in 1811 cantor and in 1816 dean of Valeria .

On 25 May 1817 he was elected bishop of Sion, the election was on 28 July 1817 by Pope Pius VII. Confirmed and took place on October 12, 1817 by Bishop Carlo Zen the ordination .

In the diocese of Sion he made a contribution to educating the clergy and in 1817 he moved the seminary from Gerunden to Valiera and in 1825 he held priestly retreats for the first time .

In 1822 he also accepted the connection of the parish of Gondo to the diocese of Sion.
