history

Ecône was already settled in Roman times, its Latin name at the time was Esquinium .

In the 13th century the domain of Ecône in the hamlet of the same name in the municipality of Riddes (dt. Outdated Riden ) on the left bank of the Rhône belonged to the Lords of Turn . In 1302 Peter vom Turn sold the farm and the goods belonging to it to the Canons of the Great Saint Bernhard . In 1822 Ecône became the seat of the cantonal agricultural school. Managed by the canons, it remained in operation until 1922. In 1968 the property was sold to private individuals, who in 1970 left it to the Society of St. Pius X. The estate remained in their possession until 1979, the seminary founded by Marcel Lefebvre in Ecône still exists.
