The monastery in Seedorf is the oldest monastery in the canton of Uri and also the only one whose origins go back to the Middle Ages .

The Lazariterhaus was built in Seedorf in 1197. The Lazarus Order , a hospital order and later also a knightly order, was founded, as a rule, in double monasteries with a house of brothers and sisters, as was the case in Seedorf.

With the end of the Crusades and a decline in the care of lepers , the Lazarites lost their importance. In 1413 the male monastery was closed, while the nunnery continued to exist until it finally went out around 1526 in the general crisis of the 16th century after many nuns had succumbed to the plague in 1518. According to the law of the time, the buildings and the property fell to the land of Uri .

As a sign of the Counter-Reformation , a Benedictine abbey with nuns from the Claro Monastery , Canton Ticino , was built in Seedorf in 1559 . Spiritually the new monastery was looked after first by the Bishop of Constance , then by the Benedictine monasteries Einsiedeln and Muri , from 1642 until today by the monastery Einsiedeln.

Since the unused Lazarite buildings (consisting of a small church, a hospital, a nurses 'house and a brothers' house) had fallen into disrepair, the construction of today's monastery began at the end of the 17th century. The abbey church was consecrated in 1700 and the entire building was completed in 1727.

The 11 sisters earn their living through arts and crafts, agriculture and taking in guests. In 2009 the Benedictine Abbey celebrated its 450th anniversary.
