Rudolf Henggeler

Rudolf Henggeler OSB (born November 1, 1890 in Oberägeri as Alois Henggeler ; † May 21, 1971 in Einsiedeln ) was a Swiss Benedictine and historian .

Life

Rudolf Henggeler came from one of the oldest families in the Ägerital and was the son of the farmer Wolfgang Henggeler and his wife Maria (née Blattmann), who ran the Bethenbühl farm.

He attended grammar school in Einsiedeln from 1904 and was a theology student at the University of Innsbruck from 1911 to 1912 .

In August 1912 his novitiate began in Einsiedeln monastery , in 1913 he received his profession , on September 14th he became a subdeacon and on October 22nd, 1916 he was ordained a priest . He was then sub-archivist from November 4, 1916 to July 31, 1929 ; During this time Abbot Dr. Thomas Bossart from October 9, 1917 to January 23, 1920 as a catechist in Bennau ; from 1919 he was teacher of history at the secondary school in Einsiedeln and from 1924 to 1929 teacher of religious history in the novitiate. In 1927 he was appointed apostolic notary. After the death of the historian Odilo Ringholz (1852–1929) Rudolf Henggeler took over the management of the archive.

From 1933 to 1934 he completed a history degree at the University of Zurich , but did not complete it.

After the death of Norbert Flueler (1865–1941), who took over the archive, he followed it again as archivist from 1941 to 1968 and was also appointed chancellor of the abbey during this time. He rearranged the archives of the St. Gerold Provostry and worked in the archives of the Ottobeuren monastery and in the archives of the Congregation for Rites in Rome . During this time he became a novice professor in 1942 as a lecturer in Benedictine religious history and was a history teacher in Sarnen from October 1954 to July 1956 .

Writing

He managed the various art collections of Einsiedeln Abbey and made scientific contributions to the history of the abbey, the Benedictine order and the history of Central Switzerland . He conducted research on patronage and religious folklore, was the author of the Monasticon Benedictinum Helvetiae series , in which he published, among other things, the books of professions of the St. Gallen and Einsiedeln abbeys , and was the editor of annual books . He was also the initiator of the revision of Helvetia Sacra and its first editor.
