history

Today's association was founded in 1927 as the Swiss Association for the Preservation of Castles and Ruins , at a time when historicism was coming to an end. The first president was the architect Eugen Probst , one of the founding members was Erwin Poeschel . Anyone could become a member. Initially, the focus was on the preservation of castles and ruins, followed by archaeological research. Under the second President Hugo Schneider (President 1955–1972) the change to the scientific orientation of the association took place. In 1959 it was renamed to its current name. From the first approaches in the 1930s and 1940s, castle archeology began to establish itself as a separate branch of research. Under the successor to President Schneider, Werner Meyer (President 1973–1997), the archaeological tasks were increasingly taken over by the cantonal archaeologists and preservationists; the castle association saw its task increasingly in the publication of scientific publications. From 1997 to 2003 the association was chaired by Heinrich Boxler , who was replaced in 2003 by Renata Windler. The archaeologist Daniel Gutscher has been president of the association since 2014 .

The organ of publication was from 1927 to 1958 News of the Swiss Association for the Preservation of Castles and Ruins and from 1959 to 1995 News of the Swiss Castle Association .
