Bennau is a village in the canton of Schwyz . It belongs to the Einsiedeln district and has around 900 inhabitants. The village is located on the northern edge of the Rothenthurm high moor , at the confluence of the Alp and the Biber .

The first documentary mention was made in 1331 under the name Bennowa , which means Bennos Au (= meadow). Benno was Canon of Strasbourg and from 927 to 929 Bishop of Metz . He retired to the Meinrad cell , where he died in 940.
