Helmi Gasser

Wilhelmine "Helmi" Gasser (born June 8, 1928 in Lucerne ; † December 13, 2015 in Basel ) was a Swiss art historian and author.

Life

Gasser was born in 1928 as the daughter of a dentist in Lucerne and grew up in Basel. After graduating from high school in Basel, she studied art history, archeology and German literature in Basel and at the Sorbonne in Paris . After her doctorate as Dr. phil. In 1955 she processed Heinrich Wölfflin's estate . From 1955 to 1961 she was the Basel art correspondent for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung . She then worked until 1978 as an adjunct for the Basel monument preservation department. From 1979 she inventoried the art monuments of Uri.

In the book series Die Kunstdenkmäler der Schweiz published by the Society for Swiss Art History , several books by Gasser about Uri were published from 1986 onwards. Further of her publications appeared in the series Swiss Art Guides .

Gasser was a member of several historical and art historical societies. In 1998 she became an honorary citizen of the Canton of Uri . In 2004 she received the Altdorf Medal of Honor.
