The Sorbonne Université is a French university in Paris. It has existed in its current form since the beginning of 2018 and emerged from the merger of the University of Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV) and the University of Pierre and Marie Curie (Paris VI) . The biologist Jean Chambaz has presided over it since its inception.

Main building and other branches

The main building of the Sorbonne Université is located at Rue Victor Cousin 1 on the left bank of the Seine ( Rive Gauche ). The historic building forms the focal point of the Quartier Latin student quarter . While the main entrance is on rue Victor Cousin, there are side entrances on rue Cujas and rue Saint-Jacques . The entrance to the Rector's Office is on Rue des Écoles.

Since the spatial capacity of the main building is insufficient for large numbers of students, there are other Sorbonne branches in Paris where students are taught (including Clignancourt and Malesherbes). In addition, the Sorbonne has also had a branch in Abu Dhabi since 2006 .

Organization and student body

The Sorbonne Université consists of three faculties: (1) Faculty of Humanities (Faculté des Lettres), (2) Faculty of Medicine (Faculté de Médecine), (3) Faculty of Science and Engineering (Faculté des Sciences et Ingénierie). It is also divided into 31 subject areas (UFR).

According to the university, 55,600 students were studying at the Sorbonne Université in February 2019. Of these, 10,200 were of foreign origin.

International rankings

Both the University of Paris IV (humanities orientation) and the University of Pierre and Marie Curie (science orientation) were considered leading universities in their fields before their merger. Since it was founded, the Sorbonne Université has been listed by international rankings as one of the most prestigious universities in France and Europe.

The Shanghai ranking ranks the Sorbonne Université as the best university in France, in 9th place in Europe and in 36th place worldwide. It is also listed in the CWTS Leiden Ranking at number 1 in France. It is currently in 75th place (worldwide) in the QS World University Rankings .
