Martin Schlappner (film critic)

Martin Schlappner (born October 13, 1919 in Olten ; † March 14, 1998 in Zurich ) was a Swiss film critic and long-time editor of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung .

Life

Schlappner grew up in Saarland until 1935 . After graduating from high school in Solothurn , he studied German literature, history and art history in Geneva and Bern . In 1947 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. with a thesis on Thomas Mann . From 1950 he worked as a freelancer, from 1956 to 1984 as editor of the NZZ, where he headed the film editing department for many years.

In addition, Schlappner worked as a lecturer at various universities: from 1962 to 1964 as a lecturer for film theory and film history at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau , from 1967 to 1968 at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin , and from 1976 to 1978 at the University of Zurich . From 1963 to 1988 he chaired the jury for quality awards of the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA), from 1967 to 1977 he headed the Swiss Society of Solothurn Film Days .

From 1960 to 1972 Martin Schlappner was chairman of the Zurich Association for Homeland Security . In 1989 he received the award from the city of Zurich for general cultural merits.

His estate is administered at the Department of Film Studies at the University of Zurich.

He found his final resting place in the Manegg cemetery in Zurich
