Curse (born September 6, 1978 in Minden ; real name Michael Sebastian Kurth ) is a German rapper and systemic coach . The artist name Curse ( English 'curse') is an allusion to his family name Kurth pronounced as a th sound with a German accent.

Life

Curse in the slaughterhouse in Hamburg (1999)

Curse rapped in his youth with the band Phat Kicks , whose former members later formed the band Treadmill . With titles like Zwei Mal in den Kopf from the CD Straight Outta Broketown , the band performed in youth clubs in the Stadthagen area in the mid-1990s .

In 2000, he rapped along with GZA , Prodigal Sunn and Stieber Twins on the single I Live For Hip Hop by DJ Tomekk who placed in the German charts.

Already on his first studio album Feuerwasser from 2000 the lyrics are self-reflective and process his own experiences, but there is also a classic hip-hop part with representative and battle tracks. Curse often raps about failed love relationships and also admits mistakes to himself. Most of the beats on Feuerwasser and many other releases are produced by Sascha Busy Bühren. However, the beats of the latest releases, including those from the Sinnflut album , are mainly from Sieben and Claud .

In 2001 his second album was released, the top ten CD From Inside To Outside , on which Curse pursued this style and with the single Let's be friends for the first time, it achieved attention outside of the hip-hop scene for the first time. The hip-hop magazine Juice awarded it the best album national 2001 in 2001 . The album received international attention and was z. B. published in Japan.

Five days after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , in response to the events, Curse published the Freetrack Nothing Will Be As It Was , in which he called for more tolerance and responsibility.

Shift to more instruments

On his third album Innere Sicherheit from 2003, the style of the music changed in some aspects: While the beats on the previous albums were mostly electronically produced, you will find a wider range of instruments on Innere Sicherheit : from sophisticated instrumentals to classical flutes ( I understand you ) to the crossover song shock therapy to the very emotional And what about now? , a piano ballad, there is a wide spectrum of musical variation, which accompanies and emphasizes the mostly very profound lyrics. An increasing number of political and socially critical texts can be seen mostly from a left-wing perspective, whereby Curse does not neglect his 'old' topics. The single Resistance with the German reggae artist Gentleman was created in this context . The single What about now? was Homeland Security's greatest commercial success .

Curse has also made a name for himself when it comes to working with emerging talent. For example, he gave Italo Reno & Germany and Stress & Trauma the opportunity to present himself to a broader public through guest appearances on his publications and through his artist platform Alles Real Records . Over the years Curse has also worked through numerous collaborations with international and German artists, including Azad , Kool Savas , Tone , Xavier Naidoo , Max Herre ( Freundeskreis ), Samy Deluxe , Dendemann , J-Luv , Braz ( 4Lyn ), Gentleman , Nneka , Hassan Annouri , Pal One , Patrice , Melbeatz , Cassandra Steen , Pete Rock , Black Thought ( The Roots ), The Arsonists , Stieber Twins , DJ Tomekk , Greis , TAZ , RZA and Fort Baxter .

Fourth and fifth studio albums

His fourth studio album, Sinnflut , was released on December 2, 2005 ; the first single Gangsta Rap reached its top position at number 22. On Sinnflut , Curse returns to his roots, in contrast to the experimental album Innere Sicherheit . It is a versatile release with deep and personal songs like No Way Back or My Life and representative tracks like Der Fluch or the Samy Deluxe feature Broken Language Reloaded , which is a remake of the classic Broken Language by Smoothe Da Hustler with Trigger Tha Gambler from 1995 is.

Curse fulfilled a childhood dream with the features of Black Thought from The Roots and producer legend Pete Rock . The latter was persuaded by Curse to sing shoutouts and a hook, which he did last time for Curse's great role model Nas .

On October 5, 2007, Curse presented part of the radio program Plan B on the WDR station 1LIVE for the first time . Curse can be heard every four weeks and shares the moderation on a weekly basis, alternating with Jan Delay , Max Herre and Patrice . Further appointments were initially planned until 2009.

Internationally, Curse worked with Akhenaton , Shurik'N , Promoe and other artists on the Diversidad project and their first release experience .

The album, titled Freedom was published on 26 September 2008, two weeks after the published on 12 September 2008 single release freedom with Marius Müller-Westernhagen . The album was rated almost the highest by the hip-hop magazine Juice with 5.5 out of six crowns and reached 12th position in the German charts. The second single Until the end with Silbermond climbed in seventh place.

Anniversary EP and ending as a rapper

Curse (2012)

After Curse had released his albums on GUN Records , a sub-label of Sony BMG, for several years , it was announced in February 2009 that the rapper's releases would appear on Four Music in the future .

In September 2009 a law firm warned several bloggers, among others on behalf of the Curse record company. It was criticized that there was a song by Curse on a linked mixtape that was offered for download free of charge. As a result, resentment arose in the blogosphere, as such tapes were previously tolerated in support of the artists.

For the tenth anniversary of the release of the album Feuerwasser , the EP 20 Feuerwasser 10 was released in 2010 as a supplement to an issue of the hip-hop magazine Juice . In this EP, and later officially on his website, Curse announced that he would not continue his rap career for the time being. Since then he has been a member of the group The Achtung Achtung , which he founded together with the Swedish producer Jimmy Ledrac . Most recently, Curse worked as a composer in the background and worked a. a. on the top 10 success Never Forget and the single release Moment by Glasperlenspiel with.
