DJ Tomekk (* 11. October 1975 in Krakow , civic Tomasz Kuklicz ) is a Polish hip-hop - DJ and music producer .

biography

The early youth

Tomekk was born in Krakow. His father was a Moroccan pianist and his mother a visual artist. At the age of ten, Kuklicz met a DJ for the first time and was inspired by “deejaying”. In the same year his father emigrated to Germany and he followed him to West Berlin , where he lived in Wedding and attended the Diesterweg-Gymnasium . When his father died five years later, the then 15-year-old was on his own. The city of Berlin took care of it and Tomekk's home for the last three years until he came of age was the children's home "Frohsinn" in the Berlin district of Wedding. During this time he met Sido , who was five years his junior and who later dedicated the song TOMEKK to him on the Numma Eyns album . Tomekk was on the Berlin graffiti scene, where he won a graffiti award.

Record deal and his own radio show

At the age of 15 he made his first recording contract with the Stuff Records label and in 1991 released the single OC featuring MC Mis One with the songs Wait In Love For You and Art Gangster Rap . On January 1, 1993, the Berlin broadcaster Kiss FM started under the motto “Only Black Music” from a bakery in Neukölln. Seventeen-year-old hip-hop DJ Tomekk got his own hip-hop radio show, which he called “Boogie Down Berlin”.

Success in america

In 1993 hip-hop legend Kurtis Blow came to Kiss FM for an interview on DJ Tomekk's show Boogie Down Berlin . Coincidentally, Kurtis Blow needed a short-term replacement for a DJ and asked DJ Tomekk. DJ Tomekk was now Kurtis Blow's DJ and the two toured the United States for a year. They played on the East Coast and West Coast, including in Baltimore in front of 300,000 people - in Rikers Island Prison , New York, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. With his special position as the "Godfather of Hip Hop" Kurtis Blow stood in the East-Coast-West-Coast conflict outside of the disputes between the rappers ( Beef ). Thus, Tomekk was able to go from MOP to Dr. Dre meet all known hip-hop artists. P. Diddy was part of the tour as a dancer. It was unusual at the time for a white man to be on the American hip-hop scene. Eminem was not known at the time and only adopted his stage name two years later.

In November 1993, Tomekk was honored for his work by the City of Los Angeles for Peace and International Understanding. In 1994 DJ Tomekk was the first non-US-American to be nominated for the "1st Annual Rap Music Award". While he was hardly known in Germany, he already appeared in the USA with Run-DMC , the Wu-Tang Clan , LL Cool J and KRS One . After that, DJ Tomekk toured Europe with Kurtis Blow - the France tour alone lasted a few weeks.

Back in Germany, DJ Tomekk took part in the three clubs: Strike, Tabou Berlin and Alcatraz. There he also played as a resident DJ and as a DJ in other Berlin clubs, for example regularly in Walfisch / Boogaloo . DJ Tomekk became increasingly active as a music producer. He produced primarily for American artists. Under various synonyms - such as Atomek Dogg - he produces albums and remixes. In 1996 DJ Tomekk worked with Lauryn Hill and produced the remix Fu-Gee-La-La for the Fugees . In Germany he publishes various compilations and mixtapes, on which he often integrates American and German artists into one song. The cassettes were first copied on a cassette copying station. The sampler Black Club Groove made it to number 16 on the compilation charts . In the video I live for Hip Hop , which is played in what is now Soho House Berlin, alludes to the self-distribution of cassettes.

In 1998 he founded the hip-hop office in Berlin with Ronny "Ernie" Boldt, a roommate of his flat-share in Berlin-Mitte, who still looks after successful hip-hop artists such as Alligatoah , BRKN and RAF Camora as a music manager in Germany , and Guido Schulz, his future manager. Tomekk experimented with musicians from a wide variety of genres and toured with the band Reality Brothers, for example, who played a mix between reggae and hip-hop as the opening act for Ziggy Marley's reggae summer, as can later also be found with the band Seeed .

In 1998 he released a remix of The Boy Is Mine for Brandy , which stayed in the US charts for 27 weeks and made it to number one there. On November 9, 1999, Hot Boyz by the American rapper Eve appeared with the remix of Tomekk, climbed to number 5 on the US charts and lasted 21 weeks.

In 1999 the sporting goods manufacturer Fila founded the label F-Records. Tomekk was one of the first artists to be signed and the production 1, 2, 3 Rhymes Galore was created in 1999 - an international cooperation involving artists such as the American hip-hop DJ Grandmaster Flash , Flavor Flav (member of the US American band Public Enemy ) as well as the German rappers Afrob , Jazzy Jeff and MC Rene took part. This song was able to stay in the German top 10 charts for several weeks (highest ranking: 6). The Berlin graffiti artist Eric "Specter" Remberg , later co-founder of the Aggro Berlin label , was working at this time as an art director and director for DJ Tomekk's productions. The second single I live for hip-hop in collaboration with GZA , Prodigal Sunn , Curse and the Stieber Twins reached number 11 in the Media Control Charts. For Sabrina Setlur he produced a remix for the song Hija with the German rappers Cora E. . and Brixx , which stayed in the German charts for 35 weeks. DJ Tomekk received the Juice Award for best producer that same year .

2000 to 2010

In 2000 Tomekk produced the remix Anything with rapper Jay-Z . The song reached number 18 in the UK singles chart. DJ Tomekk got the Comet as best national newcomer. In October came out his remix You and Me by LL Cool J ; in 2001 the song I Like Girls was released with Coolio . Coolio and Tomekk had been making music together since 1999. In 2002 another cooperation appeared, Ghetto Square Dance . In 2000, Mexico's first hip-hop band, Control Machete , released the double-maxi singles Control Machete Vs. Dj Tomekk Vs. Eminem Si señor / iles3 .

In 2001, DJ Tomekk moved to New York and went into the studio with American basketball player and rapper Shaquille O'Neal . In the song How You Like That (Ja, ja, ja) Shaquille O'Neal, who spent part of his childhood in Germany, raps a mix of English and German. Their music was used for an American-wide advertising campaign "Don't Drink and Drive" against drink-driving by the US administration under Obama, for whose music well-known musicians were always used and Michael Jackson was honored in 1984 . In the same year, DJ Tomekk released the single Beat of Life with the American musician and actor Ice-T and Sandra Nasić , the singer of the Guano Apes , which stayed in the German charts for nine weeks (number 12). Shortly thereafter, DJ Tomekk produced the song Prosto Z Polski and Return of Hip-Hop with the New York rapper Prodigal Sunn and the rapper Liroy, who is known in Poland , with KRS-One , in which the German rappers Torch and MC Rene participated. To this end, DJ Tomekk shot a video with the protagonists in which hip-hop was revived by hospital staff. The song immediately rose to number 5 in the German charts. In February 2001, DJ Tomekk released his first album, which was also called Return of Hip Hop . The album also contained the track The Genesis , which was created in cooperation with the Aphrodelics from Vienna and which was about the origin of hip-hop.

In the same year Nena released her single Leuchtturm with a remix by DJ Tomekk. For the German rapper Sido , who was still unknown in 2001 , Tomekk created a dubplate of the ass fuck song and played it for the first time in hip clubs across Germany. With US rapper Lil 'Kim , he achieved another top 10 hit in Germany with the song Kimnotyze .

Nothing But You was a 2003 single released by Paul van Dyk in collaboration with British group Hemstock & Jennings, with trance singer Jan Johnston and Kym singing. The song was a remix of the 2002 single Arctic by Hemstrong & Jennings, was released with the remix by DJ Tomekk and was featured in the soundtrack of EA Games Fifa Football 2004 and its Cirrus remix in "Need For Speed: Underground 2". It reached number 14 on the UK singles chart and number 6 on the US Hot Dance Club Play. DJ Tomekk's production for Paul van Dyk was nominated for a Grammy Award. In 2003, Snap! a remix of their world hit Ooops Up as a single, produced by DJ Tomekk . DJ Tomekk went on tour with his Boogie Down Berlin Crew (DJ Noppe, Said, Saeed, Trooper Da Don ), in which he made about 150 appearances. DJ Tomekk was nominated nationally as best artist by VIVA Comet 2003 .

Ganxtaville Pt. III was a production by DJ Tomekk with the US rapper Kurupt , the German rapper Tatwaffe and the German-Turkish singer G-Style and stayed in the top 10 of the German single charts for eight weeks. In 2004 the single Party with Lil'O was released , which stayed in the German charts for 5 weeks, and the single Mein Block by Sido with a remix by DJ Tomekk.

In the following years, DJ Tomekk worked with artists such as MC Lyte , Xzibit , Noreaga , B-Tight , Montell Jordan , Truth Hurts , Horace Brown, Black Ivory and Harris on his new album Numma Eyns , which he finally released in 2005. The single Jump, Jump (DJ Tomekk is coming) (feat. Fler and G-Hot ) made it to number three in the German charts. For Jump, Jump , DJ Tomekk had Eric “Specter” Remberg - who had meanwhile founded Aggro Berlin - shoot the most elaborate German hip-hop video to date. Other well-known German rappers also had guest appearances in the video. DJ Tomekk was nominated as best artist by VIVA Comet 2005 .

At the end of 2006, DJ Tomekk released the mixtape The Next Generation . He produced this together with Bushido and numerous newcomers to support them. In 2009, DJ Tomekk produced a soundtrack for the beverage brand "Ständer" and put on a party at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles in September 2009 . The German rappers Xatar and Sido were invited; Xatar was arrested.

In 2010 the studio album Ehrenkodex by Dj Tomekk and Toony was released on a Polish label with many features from German and Polish artists, including Kollegah and Farid Bang .

2011 until today

DJ Tomekk works as a radio DJ and still spends almost every weekend in clubs and festivals around the world - especially in America and German-speaking countries. In 2012 he made the America tour Tomekk goes America . In 2013, the American R&B singer and songwriter Dawn Richard released the single Riot with a Tomekk remix. On the occasion of their 20th stage anniversary, DJ Tomekk and Kurtis Blow released the single The Legendary Hip Hop Sway together under the label “Boogie Down Berlin” in 2013 and won the gold record. In 2014 he released the album DJ Tomekk Presents the Nexxt Generation , on which Bushido dedicated the song Mein Game to him.

In 2016 he released the single Lonely under his name with Dante Thomas . In the video filmed in the Maldives, Sido's ex-girlfriend Doreen Steinert plays the leading role. In 2017 the hip-hop dance show Berlin Nights was staged in the Theater am Potsdamer Platz, in which DJ Tomekk is one of the main characters. DJ Tomekk took over the musical direction and music production.

DJ Tomekk is an integral part of the US and German hip-hop scene in the 1990s and among label founders as a pioneer and trailblazer for the development of German hip-hop. He worked as a presenter for Kiss FM Berlin, 1 Live and Jam FM and was seen in Germany as a presenter for MTV ( MTV Streetlive ) and VIVA. Under the synonym, DJ Tomekk is represented worldwide on over 500 different sound carriers. DJ Tomekk announced that he would work under additional pseudonyms in order to be able to try out new things and to free himself from the pressure to succeed.

In 2019 he released the song Never Give Up and Text U Back with Drake and Tyga with the American hip-hop duo MOP .

In 2020 his book "I live for Hip Hop" will be published by Heyne-Verlag with a foreword by Kurtis Blow .

controversy

Initially, Tomekk was accused of a "sell out" by the German hip-hop community - selling out the alternative hip-hop scene to a mainstream audience. Participation in TV shows for a wide audience or partnerships with companies that are frowned upon by German hip-hop artists are common for American artists and are not viewed as reprehensible there. For example, Snoop Dog sang dressed as Roy Black in a commercial. It's nice to be in the world . In the early 2000s, DJ Tomekk's behavior, which he brought back from America, met with little understanding from the German hip-hop community. He not only produced the albums of numerous artists - also outside his genre, but also music for campaigns, for example for brands like Langnese of the Unilever group . DJ Tomekk was thus a pioneer in the commercialization of German hip-hop . German hip-hop artists and labels only gradually followed suit. In 1999, shortly before the release of his album, Samy Deluxe started a battle against DJ Tomekk, raising public allegations that he had only done this to attract media attention and thus sell more albums.

In January 2008, DJ Tomekk took part as a candidate for the third season of the RTL show Ich bin ein Star - Get me out of here! part, which he had to leave prematurely because he was seen in a private video with the Hitler salute , which from his point of view was just a "stupid joke". He pointed out that he was married to a black woman and that he had no racist or right-wing ideology. Tomekk took legal action against the misrepresentation and reporting of his parody. As part of a settlement, it was agreed that RTL would drop the claim of an intentional Hitler salute and donate DJ Tomekk's entire fee to the Havelland music and art school. In 2018, the media and linguist Frederik Weinert dealt extensively with the phenomenon of media victims and, in the case of DJ Tomekk, shows in detail in two of his works how information was processed, prepared and timed by the media in order to gain media attention and thus usable quotas to create.
