Capriol Suite

Capriol Suite is a musical work by the English composer Peter Warlock , composed in October 1926. It is a suite of six dances which, according to the composer , are taken from the orchésography of the French priest and Renaissance choreographer Thoinot Arbeau , written in 1588 . Warlock's biographer Cecil Gray wrote: "If you compare these pieces with what the composer made of them, it becomes clear that you can regard them as an independent work in every respect."

The suite is the composer's most popular work. It consists of the following sentences:

  1. Basse Danse (Allegro moderato)
  2. Pavane (Allegretto ma un poco lento)
  3. Tordion (Con moto)
  4. Bransles (Presto)
  5. Pieds en l'air (Andantino tranquillo)
  6. Mattachins (Allegro con brio)

Warlock first wrote the piece for two pianos, then for string orchestra. In 1928 a version for symphony orchestra was created.
